The first career, from 1984 to 1998, included her role as Director of du Cros and Associates, a consulting firm located in Melbourne, Australia, specializing in impact assessment, visitor planning and heritage research. She later taught in Hong Kong and Macau and has conducted research/consulting in the Asia Pacific region. This combination of heritage management and business tourism provide a unique perspective on management, marketing and sustainability. Dr du Cros also has a long history of active involvement in organizations on a national and international level, such as United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and UNESCO. She has published 89 works, including books, journal articles, conference papers, monographs and book chapters. Books include a collaboration with Yok-shiu F. Lee on "Cultural Heritage Management in China" (2007) and the popular textbook with Bob McKercher on "Cultural Tourism: The Partnership between Tourism and Cultural Heritage Management" (2002).

Research funded through IFT Macau: 2008-9 Managing World Heritage Brand Equity. Joint project with the University of New Brunswick, Canada 2008-9 Self-drive Tourism in China. Overview from interviews and internet sources on the way that Chinese tourists are experiencing their own country by car and the implications of this new trend for sustainable tourism development. 2006+ Chinese Mainland Tourists and Heritage Assets for Tourism – Stage 1 of Western Exoticism and Asian Tourists Project. This project looks at how Asian tourists are experiencing certain aspects of postcolonial Asia and tries to understand the market demand for a greater range of cultural tourism products. 2005+ Congestion Management at Popular Heritage Attractions in Macau. IFT and Department of Social and Cultural Affairs. Ongoing research is being conducted on potential congestion and social impacts of the development of tourism on Macau‟s local community, urban environment and heritage following from a consulting project. 2002+ Shamian Island, Guangzhou, Heritage Management Project. Longitudinal study of the national protection area‟s development for tourism. Also co-investigator on three research projects with other IFT colleagues: medical tourism in Asia, impact of Cotai tourism development on Taipa and the emergence of a new market segment via the Internet: mainland Chinese backpackers. Research funded through Hong Kong Universities Prior to being appointed as a full-time academic at IFT, Dr du Cros had to secure research funding to support her scholarly activities. She wrote or was the major author of the following successful research grant applications, which resulted in her employment as a research fellow: 2004-5 Cultural Heritage Management in China Project. Heritage Management Consultant (1984-1998)
After starting as an independent consultant in 1984 in Sydney, Dr du Cros moved to Melbourne and established du Cros and Associates in1990. Dr du Cros was the owner and operator of this business, a consulting firm located in Port Melbourne, specialising in cultural heritage impact assessment in Environmental Impact Assessment‟s (EIA‟s), heritage conservation, visitor planning, anthropological and archaeological research. du Cros and Associates Was the second largest organisation of its type in Australia with 10 professionals on staff Successfully bid for and completed over 250 projects Successfully bid for 15 competitive National Estate Research Grants, in addition to consultancy projects Won awards for the part played in the following studies: o Calder Highway Black Forest Section Environmental Effects Statement 1995. The firm was part of a multi-disciplinary team employed by state road authority VicRoads to carry out the EES. The project received an honourable mention in the Rural Planning Achievement Category of the Royal Australian Planning Institute‟s Awards for Planning Excellence, 1996. Buckland Military Training Area, Eastern Tasmania 1992. The firm was engaged by Jerry de Gryse Pty Ltd to produce a Land Management Plan for the Department of Defence. The plan received a Merit Award in the Planning and Analysis Category of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects National Awards, 1992.

Significant Projects Shepparton Bypass Planning Study Environmental Effects Statement: Cultural Heritage Component, 1995-98. An intensive three year study of multiple freeway routes with the goal of mitigating impacts on highly significant cultural heritage assets. Ove Arup and Partners Pty Ltd and VicRoads, Melbourne. Cultural Heritage Impact Assessments (CHIAs) for the majority of the key infrastructure projects in the state of Victoria and Melbourne, 1989-1998 (full list can be provided on request). Macedon Ranges Aboriginal Sites Study, 1996-7. This study was nominated for one of the Inaugural Aboriginal Reconciliation Council Awards in 1997 because of the close collaboration between the Aboriginal community, non-Aboriginal community, local council and heritage consultants on the project. Guidelines for Local Communities Management of Cultural Heritage Sites, 1996. In cooperation with Australian Heritage Commission and Context Heritage Consultants. Pilot audit of the National Estate of Australia, 1994-5 which developed a system for identifying and assessing sites at risk for the State of the Environment monitoring process nation-wide. This process is part of Australia‟s sustainable development strategy. Commonwealth Commission of Inquiry: East Coast Armaments Complex, Point Wilson, 1994-6. The heritage component of the study was conducted by the firm for Kinhill Engineers Pty Ltd and the Department of Defence. The assessment included historical research, survey and assessment of heritage assets and a detailed set of management recommendations. Minerva Gas Field Environmental Effects Statement, 1995-7. The firm produced the heritage component for the EES for BHP Petroleum which included historical research, archaeological survey, subsurface testing and significance assessment. It also conducted lengthy and detailed consultation with the Aboriginal community and the Director of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission throughout the project. Cascades Female Factory Convict Site Conservation and Site Interpretation Plan, 1993. After it was implemented in 1994, the Department of Parks, Heritage and Wildlife won a national award from the Australian Heritage Commission for providing an outstanding example of the development of a Women‟s Heritage Site for tourism. Survey of the Southwest Tasmania World Heritage Area, 1992. The survey of surface Aboriginal archaeological sites was undertaken for the Tasmanian Parks, Heritage and Wildlife Service with funding from the World Heritage Grants Fund.
